MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO

Dr. and Mrs. Otis B. Edwards

TO THEE OUR DEAR OAKWOOD

CHORUS: To thee our dear Oakwood
To thee we shall ever sing
For decades thou has stood
Thy name shall ever ring,
Here we spend our happy days.
And we love to sing thy praise.
And where-ever we may be,
We will always be true to thee.
Our worthy old, old O.C.

1.

Our dear Oakwood within those vale

Thy standards will not fail.

Our hearts are filled with wondrous cheer

When thoughts of thee draw near,

We love thy pines, thy elms, thy oaks

And campus always green.

The many flowers and distant mounts,

Form one impressive scene.

2.
From states afar and isles of sea
Thy students come to thee,
And fain do linger in thy halls
Enlightened truthfully
From nature's scenes they ever learn,
And study from thy soil.
Till many more thy works discern.
We'll pray for thee and toil.

As happy birds come in the spring

And sing not for their pay.

Rich, natural melodies they bring

Cheering thruout the day.

We too, will serve thee faithfully

In all we do and say.

We hope in Good, we trust in thee

True and loyal we'll be.

HELLO!! EVERYBODY!!

IT'S SO GOOD TO SEE YOU!

AGAIN, we are passionately delighted with your
presence at our Alumni Homecoming Weekend. An ex-
hilirating Weekend has been planned!

MORE than ever before, educational administrators
are recognizing the importance of the alumni of their
constituencies. College officers leave, faculties change,
old buildings come down and new ones arise, but the
common thread running through a college's life is the
lifelong relationship alumni have with the institution.

BY products of a well-managed alumni program facilitate increased gifts to
the Annual Alumni Fund, which for the past 3 years has totaled 5340,000 in un-
restricted funds and thousands of dollars in restricted funds from alumni.

MAY the programs and activities of this weekend provide \ou the opportu-
nity to get involved with the institution and to share your funds and expertise,
in our effort to obtain our Alumni/Beca goal of $130,000.

Elder Joseph Hinson was born in Cheraw, South
Carolina. He received his elementary and secondary
education in Wadesboro, North Carolina and Balti-
more, Maryland respectively.

During his teenage years, his mother chose to re-
side in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was in this
city that he was inducted into the United States Army
during World War II. He served for two and a half
years, in the States and in the European Theater of
Operation (ETO), in England and France.

Shortly after his honorable discharge from the army,
he attended a series of evangelistic meetings being con-
ducted by Elder E. E. Cleveland in Winston-Salem,
North Carolina. In the fall of 1948, he became a bap-
tized member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and
served as a Literature Evangelist for several months.

In January 1949, he entered Oakwood College to
begin his ministerial studies and training. While at Oak-
wood College, he was active in student affairs. Dur-
ing his senior year, he was elected President of the
United Student Movement. His strong leadership abilities, winning personality, and hard work con-
tributed to the funding and erection of the college Gymnasium (Ashby Hall). He graduated with honors
from Oakwood College in May, 1954.

Elder Hinson was hired by the South Atlantic Conference as an Associate Publishing Secretary,
working in the states of South Carolina and Georgia. This was a continuation of his interest, because
during the summer months of his years at Oakwood College, he engaged in Literature Evangelism
and served as an assistant in several public evangelistic campaigns.

On June 20, 1954, he was married to Carolyn Thomas in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Caro-
lyn, is presently employed by the Fulton County Board of Education in Atlanta, Georgia.

Elder Hinson begin his pastoral duties in the Charleston, South Carolina District in 1958. By the
time he conducted his first evangelistic effort in Georgetown, South Carolina, he knew that he had
found his niche or place in God's work. Here he was able to get close to the people and help them
while he preached the truths of the Advent message.

He has pastored churches in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida: never failing to engage
in a evangelistic campaign each year. Hundreds of souls were led from spiritual darkness into the
gospel light because of his dedicated efforts. Churches were constructed and renovated under his able
leadership.

In the fall of 1967, Elder Hinson was called to serve in the South Atlantic Conference office as
Sabbath-School-Lay Activities Secretary. He also served as Conference Evangelist. He is presently the
Personal Ministries-Inner Cities Director and Community Service Coordinator. He has continued to
do evangelistic work each summer alorrg with his heavy office responsibilities. All thirty years of his
ministry have been in the South Atlantic Conference.

Despite his busy schedule, this faithfull son of Oakwood College supports his Alma Mater. He
engages in recruitment and encouragement of young people to enroll at Oakwood L-oilege, and sup-
ports the J. G. Thomas Chapter of the Oakwood College Alumni Association in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Hinsons are ardent supporters of Christian Education. They are proud of their three lovely
daughrers, all products of Adventist Church Schools. Kyna Diane, is presently serving on the faculty
at Oakwood College as Assistant Professor in the English and Journalism Department, Lisa is Assistant
Sales Manager with Peachtree Software in Atlanta, Georgia, Maren Faye is a Junior at Forest Lake Aca-
demy, Apopka, Florida.

A* Samuel Rashford

R is for race, a man of great pride;

A is for all the programs he tried.

S is for sure lie knew well his mission;

H is for honor and holy ambition.

F is for frankness; he spoke well his mind,

O is for Oakwood — his mission sublime.

R is for royalty a trait he projected.

D is for delivering on tasks he accepted.

Together you see that in God's wondrous plan.

He gave us a name that fits well the man.

And we who are left with life's problems to solve,

Might now in his memory stoutly resolve,

To take up the cause and fill in the space.

And work as he did for our God and our race.

Before

God used a tall,

named William
Ellis Foy.

UNKNOWN
PROPHET

a\. t the dawn of Adventism stands a tall Black
preacher-the first of three people who received
visions during the time of the Great
Disappointment.

For a centruy he was hidden in obscurity. But
now we have a more complete record of William
Foy, a courageous man who boldly faced disbe-
lief and prejudice to tell what he had seen.

Research by author Delbert W. Baker reveals
the circumstances faced by Foy and other Blacks
in New England, their acceptance in the Millerite
movement, Foy's fulfillment of his commission,

f

and his relationship with
Ellen White.

Baker describes Foy's
lofty visions of the new
earth, the judgment, and the
reward of the righteous
-visions endorsed by Ellen
White and rich with mean-
ing for us today.

Don't miss this rare
opportunity to read the facts
about this man who very
nearly disappeared in the
shadows of time.

k3 eldom does one
encounter a book that
so clearly taps the
mainsprings of
spiritual history as
does this manuscript.
The Unknown Prophet
concerns not just a
life but an experience
of fundamental
concern to the
Seventh-day Advent-
ist Church."
- Calvin B. Rock

Pastor Delbert W.
Baker was bom in Oakland,
California. He received a
bachelor's degree from
Oakwood College, and a
Master of Divinity degree
from Andrews University.
He has served as a pastor
and evangelist, conducting
evangelistic campaigns in
Africa and Europe, in addi-
tion to the United States.
Currently he is editor of
Message magazine.

A keen student of his-
tory and church history in
particular. Baker has been
involved with a number of
research projects both in the
United States and overseas.
He is the author of numer-
ous articles in church jour-
nals and other magazines
and periodicals.

A Special Tribute to...

MY DEAR HUSBAND

Joseph Hinson

''If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in a man.
Compare ivith me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor aught but love from thee give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no ivay repay;
The heavens reivard thee manifold I pray.
Then tvhile we love, in love lets so persevere
That when ive live no more, it shall be known
That we lived and loved, always, here"

ANNE BRADSTREET

YOU DESERVE THIS GREAT HONOR TODAY.
MY HEART IS HAPPY FOR YOU!

YOU

WORLD

by
Georgia D. Johnson

Dedicated to Elder Joseph Hinson

Your world is as big as you make it

I know for I used to abide in the narrowest nest

In a comer my wings pressing close to my side.

But I sighted the distant horizon where the sky line
Encircle the sea and I throbbed with a
Burning desire to traverse this immensity.

I battered the cordons around me and
Cradle my wings on the breeze then soared
To the utmost reaches with rapture, with
Power, with easel

iz^2^^

Thank you for reminding us
the sky is the limit.

To My Son
ELDER JOSEPH HINSON

I am so very proud of you, as you
are being honored today you are
all that a mother could ask for
in a son,

I wish for you Gods continued
blessings in all you do for him.
